Q & A with Dr. Greger

Amenorrhea

Since I've become vegan, my period cramps lessened, and my periods became less and less heavy, until finally I now do not get any. I have been to several doctors, who have performed blood tests and ultrasounds. All of them found me to be healthy and normal. I haven't had my period for one year now. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? I was just wondering if you had any advice in this area. I eat a very balanced diet and have also seen a natural doctor.
--Jessica

Yes you should be concerned. "Amenorrhea" (losing one's period) in adolescence can seriously threaten your bone health later on in life. You should try and regain a normal menstrual cycle by increasing energy (calories) and fat intake, reducing fiber, and reducing strenuous athletic training. You should also be very be conscious about meeting your daily calcium requirements (1300 mg. a day for women ages 9 to 18) with dark green leafy vegetables, calcium fortified foods, and/or supplements.
