Dating: What's Most Important?

By Joann Paredes, age 15

Ah, the years of dating... Which is better, their looks or personality? Whenever you are head-over-heels over someone, nothing in the world matters. But what if the super hot guy loves to pig out on hamburgers? Or the super sexy girl's favorite jacket is make out of a dead cow? Just keep this in mind...don't let this stop you from getting to know them!

I know there aren't very many vegetarians or vegans out there, especially guys. But this shouldn't be as complicated as it seems. Just because you are a vegetarian/vegan you shouldn't limit your chances picking your lucky stars. It takes patience and time to get to know that special someone before jumping into the whole dating situation.

Everybody has priorities, and your mission is to spell them out. Tell the person about what you believe in and how you feel about the animals' suffering in the world. But what if they're response is negative? What if they're too ignorant to care about the animals' suffering? Then you know right then and there they're not worth it. Don't ever be embarrassed of your values and beliefs. Don't let that person put you down.

If the one you've been wanting so long understands you and respects you, then they are a truly good person. A good boyfriend/girlfriend respects you for who you are and cares a lot for you. Maybe you can suggest to your new boyfriend to try some nice healthy, cruelty-free soy hamburgers. Or you can give your new girlfriend some advice how to shop cruelty-free. You never know, they could end up becoming a vegetarian/vegan!

--Joann Paredes believes that listening to what others say can really make a difference.
