Whenever you are part of a minority, you will have to face criticism. Whether you receive adverse pressure from family, friends, or strangers, it is important to stay strong and focused and stand up for what you believe to be the truth.
I, especially, know what it feels like to be criticized by everyone. Most of my family and friends have been supportive, but there are some that disagree and make degrading remarks and jokes. You must not let these negative comments get to you. Instead, educate and respect those who have differing opinions, even though you do not accept the beliefs they maintain.
I have written at least 10 letters to the editor of my local newspaper in support of animal rights. Many of my anti-hunting articles dealt with the so-called "sport" of hunting being really just a perverse outlet for man's bloodlust at the expense of innocent animals and how hunting goes against the Bible. This is a tough accusation since most of these hunters claim to be "good Christian men." I even targeted the poultry industry (a hard subject when Gainesville, GA boasts that it's the "poultry capital of the world!").
As you can imagine, I received about 20 negative responses to my letters calling me everything from a zealot, to the Devil, to a terrorist! Whenever you challenge someone's lifestyle and beliefs, be prepared to accept a flood of criticism. However, there is also always a small percentage of society that will appreciate your opinion and your courage to voice it. I have come across many different people--from a former sheriff to a lawyer--who have read my letters and expressed their admiration and gratification for what I have written.
Be confident with what you say or write, and have plenty of evidence to back up your position. Shrug off most of the mindless, prejudicial criticisms that you receive. Know your facts, and don't be afraid to, as Jimmy Cliff said, "getup--standup--for your rights!"
