The term "vegan Halloween" might seem like an oxymoron, but I assure you, there are plenty of treats available for those of you who don't eat gelatin, avoid carmine (red food coloring made from bugs!), and steer clear of dairy products. Of course, you do have to ask yourself if you're too old to be trick-or-treating in the first place, right? What?! You're never too old to go trick-or-treating, and if you're too embarrassed to go door-to-door at your age, you'll at least know what to eat from your little sister's candy bag!
PETAKids.com has put together a complete list of what's NOT off limits to vegans, and let me warn you, it's a long list! If you try to avoid eating sweets, don't even look at it, lest it tempt you to try one of the many candies included there (34, last time I checked). The list also includes a list of vegan snacks that you are likely to see at a Halloween party, like bean dip, Fritos, Tostitos, nuts, Wheat Thins, pretzels, Triscuits, etc.
If you're planning a party yourself this Oct. 31st, you'll have control of the menu. Be sure to read A Vegan Halloween Party for a Dozen Frolicking Ghouls from the Vegetarians in Paradise website. It comes complete with Halloween history, decoration suggestions, activity ideas, and a sample menu with recipes. Here's another great vegan Halloween site: DIY Halloween Guide. And don't miss Halloween Recipes from Vegweb.com.
So don't feel like you're missing out this Halloween. Dress up as a carrot and get out there and have fun!
