How I Went Vegan

By Silver Wind Knight

It all started about six months ago. It was just a normal day of hanging out with my friends at the skateboard shop when they decided to go to the reptile store. I went along with them thinking that nothing was out of the ordinary, but boy was I wrong!

All my life I had been an overly dramatic animal lover. I would never even let anyone kill a bug because I always believed that every living creature on this planet deserved to have a happy life no matter what it was, but I never really thought of what I was eating until my best friend fed three baby mice to the alligators. I know that alligators have to eat too, and I know that I never consumed a mouse or anything so it's not like it was the same thing, but then I thought, you know, even though it's not the same exact animal, it's still the same situation. I realized that I spent the first 13 years of my life eating dead animals that could have still been living if I didn't eat them.

After my friend let alligators consume the poor mice, I was sitting on the floor in histarics practically about to attack him for what he had just done, but instead, I got up and said,"From this day on, I'm never eating meat again."

When I told my dad about me going veg, he was really mad because he thought that it was a ridiculus idea. He thought of it like, "Hey, the animal is dead anyway, right?" But that's not what it's about. Maybe if people would just think about what they were consuming for just one minute, they would realize that we're all better off without animal products.

After the word got out to my family about my vegetarianism, everyone was against it. They all thought,"Oh this is stupid, she's never going to stick with it, this is just a waste of time," but the more and more they said that, the more and more I was convinced to keep it up.

Finally the more months went by and the more angry my family got, but I didn't care. Some kids at my school said that they tried being vegetarians, but their parents wouldn't let them, but what I don't understand is why people can't just make that decision on their own. Just because someone became a vegetarian doesn't mean that that person is going to be any less healthy as long as you eat right. And that's when I decided to become a vegan. I figured, "Well I don't really like dairy products anyway" and besides it's like you're using the cow for milk and then when it can't give you anymore, they kill it. I never really thought that that was right. So now my dream is to make more and more people vegetarians and maybe, just maybe I can save animals around the world.
