Liz, age 21:
I watched 20/20 tonight and was outraged. They did a show on PETA and made us all look like crazed lunatics who blow up research labs and protest in front of Burger Kings wearing red paint. It was so unfair that it wasn't even funny. This affects me as a vegan and animal-rights activist. I posted on their message board and right away I was accused of being a terrorist and someone who shoves my beliefs down other peoples' throats all the time. Even my mom, who is a meat-eater and isn't a PETA supporter (she's neutral) thought that it was ridiculous. This is what I posted on the ABC News message board:
I am completely and totally outraged at how you portrayed PETA tonight. I am a vegan and animal rights activist, and I believe that your show tonight was nothing but a smear-campaign against PETA. If the host had actually spoken factually and neutrally instead of promoting pro-meat/dairy propaganda, then perhaps it would have been a more unbiased show. It makes me wonder how much the meat industry paid him off to make these untrue and inflammatory remarks towards an organization that speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves. The incidents you showed of people acting like lunatics were ISOLATED incidents, and you will find extremists on ANY side of ANY political spectrum, not just animal rights. Also, I would like to see where PETA has said that you shouldn't cut the lawn; that is ridiculous. If you say PETA lies, then perhaps you should stop the lying yourself, John. Animals in the wild do kill each other FOR SURVIVAL. They do NOT set up mass factories that brutally torture animals until they suffer a slow, painful death all in the name of money. If you would expose what animals go through every day to bring people their meat, dairy and eggs, most people would make an effort to cut down on using those products or stop using them alltogether. Go to PETA and watch the Seaboard Pig Farm investigation and then you come and tell me how PETA is being too radical. I think it's quite the contrary when factory workers find it necessary to skin conscious animals alive and beat them over the head with hammers, then hang them up by one leg and slit their throats so they can bleed to death. Real humane, folks. We aren't telling you what you can and can't eat or can and can't wear, perhaps we're exposing the truth and it's your conscience who is the one telling you to stop contributing to the abuse.
The meat/dairy industry has the wool pulled over John Stossel's eyes.
In case this isn't completely clear, or there is any confusion, here is my stand when it comes to veganism, animal rights and non-vegans. I am not saying that everyone else should follow my beliefs or if you don't then you're wrong; I'm just stating how *I* feel:
1) I believe that every animal should be able to live a natural, happy life, free from confinement and abuse.
2) I do not believe that it is right to take the life of an animal unless it is attacking you or it is too sick to get well and is in pain. We have alternatives to meat and I don't believe that an animal should have to die because I'm craving a hamburger or a slab of ribs. I realize that not everyone else follows my beliefs.
3) I do not believe that an animal should have to live a life of confinement and abuse in order to give me the milk that was meant for their babies, only to succumb to a brutal slaughter when they are too weak or too old to provide the large quantities of milk that they used to produce. Animals lactate for their own offspring; you don't see other animals pumping and drinking milk from other species and humans are no exception. I realize that not everyone else follows my beliefs.
4) I believe that if someone else wants to eat meat, then they need to go out and hunt it themselves.
5) I do not believe that it is ok to tell someone else who is also trying to follow the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle that you are more dedicated than they are simply because you have a more restrictive diet.
6) I believe that people should be courteous to others with different views. Don't talk to me about the ham you had for dinner and I won't talk to you about pig farm abuse.
7) I do NOT believe in shoving my beliefs down people's throats, however I should be able to express my opinion without ridicule, as others should be able to express theirs without ridicule.
8) I do NOT think that violence is EVER the answer to anything. Committing violence in order to stop violence is counterproductive and wrong. I will not support anyone or anything that supports violence.
9) I believe that people should have every right to investigate factory farms and make that information available to the public, however it should not be forced upon anyone.
10) There are going to be lunatics on every side of any political spectrum. Do not lump me in with them just because I practice a much-lesser extreme form of their beliefs.
I am not perfect, but I am getting better at following my own rules. The reason my letter was very to-the-point and semi-aggressive is because I felt attacked and I was informing them of how I felt about what they said tonight. I don't think that people have the right to get mad at an investigative organization that is exposing animal abuse as long as that organization is not forcing people to view it/read it. I think that the show tonight was unfair because he had no facts to go along with his accusations, he passed his opinions on as facts and the PETA spokeswoman got to make maybe three statements altogether during the segment. The thing is, the same guy and people like him would have thrown a fit if PETA had gotten five minutes of airtime, but it's ok to dedicate an entire segment to slamming an organization with propaganda and having no facts to back it up with. This segment affects ME as a person. When I went to the opinions board, I was automatically referred to as a terrorist and someone who thinks I'm better than everyone else simply because I'm a vegan, and this is all because people don't do their homework, yet believe everything that people like John Stossel tell them and they take it as an absolute truth. That's fine if you don't agree with me, but at least take the time to educate yourself about a subject before you go stereotyping other people.
