This book came in the mail at just the right time for me. I've been working towards living the raw lifestyle for over a year now, and I have just never been able to stick to it 100 percent for any length of time. The longest I'd been able to do was nine days, and I couldn't deny how great I felt, but I just couldn't stick to it. I recently watched and reviewed Victoria Boutenko's 12 Steps to Raw Food 3-video set, which taught me a lot about why it's so difficult to go raw and what to do to overcome the difficulties. So once again, going 100 percent raw was in my mind, and I was consuming lots more fruits and vegetables, some days almost completely - but not quite.
Then came Alissa's book and CDs, and I was all jazzed up to start anew on the raw and living foods diet. The recipes are amazing! I've been a dehydrating, blenderizing, food processing fool for the last week. Alissa recommends that in the beginning you learn to make lots of different types of foods, otherwise you'll get to that craving point and have nowhere to go. Let me tell you, I haven't had craving one since I started making her recipes. Here's a list of some of the things I've eaten: cookies, fresh juice, salads with delicious dressings, crackers, veggie burgers, "pasta" with sauce, and smoothies. Tonight I'm going to make some zucchini chips and eggplant mini pizzas.
This is primarily a recipe book, not a nutrition manual, though Alissa does include some basic information on enzymes, acid-alkaline balance, and food combining. She also includes a complete shopping list and preparation guide for your first four weeks. She not only shares what she eats in a typical week, but also her before and after photos and story. In fact, there are 15 additional amazing transformation stories complete with before and after photos from people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. You'll no doubt find at least one you can relate to, but they will all encourage you to commit to 30 days raw. The last transformation story includes a real life "raw in process" journal from Alissa's website. I had fun going online to see where this journal writer stands now, and see her other photos, as well as journals and photos of other raw makeovers.
If you've got questions about the raw food diet, or you want to know how to answer all those well-meaning queries, turn to the "Frequently Asked Questions" section. I decided to make the 30-day commitment before I even finished reading the book! If you decide to buy Alissa's book, I highly recommend also buying her food preparation CDs. The two products together make a strong statement and an undeniable argument for going raw.
