Eating without Heating is the first book of its kind-a book on raw food by teenagers! Sergei and Valya Boutenko are probably the most widely known raw teens in the world, so it only makes sense that they'd write a book. It is not so common that family bonds would be so strong as to allow for a brother and sister to write an entire book together. It's inspiring to see other young, happy people writing on what they love doing.
This is a recipe book. No, not a cookbook, a "no-cook" book. Though I have not tried all the recipes from this book, most of them look great! Raw recipes like these really do taste like cooked food! Most of these recipes, however, contain a lot of ingredients that teenagers may not be able to obtain. If you can access quite a few ingredients, you will enjoy these recipes. There are a few simple recipes, but you may have to search for them. I agree with the Boutenkos: the recipes may make a great transition but after a while, you'll be asking for melon.
In addition to about 100 pages of raw food recipes, the Boutenkos share some their own experiences with raw food. Illustrations by Valya and "Sergei and Valya's Photo Album" add to the book. The photos of their recipes alone are proof that raw food isn't all carrot sticks and apples! Anyone not quite sure how raw food can look and taste as good as cooked food should check out this book. The album also includes pictures of them living as raw teens. It is obvious to the reader how close these two are and the respect they have for life.
The most unfortunate aspect of the book was that in it the Boutenkos' words almost seem to discourage one from going raw without parents that are raw. I do not claim that "going raw" is easy; it's a challenge. It's a challenge that makes you stronger, happier, and healthier and one that is far worth the struggle. True, it's a lot easier if you have a "raw family," but don't let this discourage you. Quite like many teens becoming vegetarian and vegan without their parent's full support, one can also "go raw."
If you're looking for hardcore experience and facts, you may want a book more in-depth, but to those looking for raw food transition recipes or food that is aesthetically appealing, this book may be what you're looking for. Eating without Heating will give you an introduction to the ways a raw food lifestyle can change the lives of those who try it and food ideas that'll help you change your life as well. I hope that all who embark on this raw food journey will develop a deep appreciation for life and love as these two authors have. After all, we young people really are the future, and we're worth it.
*Raw Family is another book co-written by Valya and Sergei with their parents.
