Vegan Bodybuilder Robert Cheeke
Answers Questions from the Vegetarianteen.com Contributors

Robert Before & After

INBF & INBA Bodybuilder Robert Cheeke is the world's most recognized vegan bodybuilder. He grew up on a farm in Oregon and though small himself, always had a fascination with huge "larger than life muscle Gods like He-Man and professional wrestlers." In 1995, out of respect for his vegan sister, he pledged to go vegetarian for one week. Ten months later he was vegan and has been ever since.

Robert promotes vegan bodybuilding worldwide and has appeared in FLEX Magazine and Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness Magazine. Visit his website, www.veganbodybuilder.com, for more photos, information, contests, message board and more.

What do you like best about being vegan?

There is an endless list that describes the things I like about being vegan. If I had to choose what I like "best" I'd have to say is the fact that I am saving lives and having a positive influence on the environment, and ultimately the planet. Other things I like about being vegan include my high energy level, the unique opportunity I have to influence others and assist in their transformation to a healthier way of living, and the fact that there are so many great vegan foods. There is a vegan alternative to nearly every non-vegan food, and nearly 100 percent of the time the non-vegan alternative is much healthier and better for you. It also causes less damage to our environment to produce the vegan foods. In my opinion, and the opinion of many, choosing a vegan lifestyle is one of the best things you can do for your health, and for the health of our planet.

What do you think of these bodybuilding magazines which promote eating so much meat? Reading them can make you feel like there's no way to be a veg teen and gain muscle without the protein from meat.

The first thing to understand is that these massive bodybuilders featured in the magazines (depending on which magazine you look at), did not get that way as a result of eating meat. The majority of them are genetically gifted athletes who train hard, but rely on anabolic steriods and muscle enhancing drugs to gain their muscle mass and build their physiques. Of course, many of them do eat meat but not all of them. They promote meat eating because that is what they do (eat meat) and for some reason attribute their muscle building success to the consumption of meat. Protein is the key element they are seeking, and meat is just one form of that. Just as I promote vegan proteins like tofu and isolated soy protein and attribute those proteins to my bodybuilding success.

Back to the magazines...I do like the muscle magazines like FLEX (which I've appeared in each of the past three years) and Muscle & Fitness, etc. because they feature bodybuilders who initially sparked my interest in bodybuilding and inspired me to be a bodybuilder myself. I am also friends with many professional bodybuilders, so it's nice for me to read the magazines to see what they have been up to.

Don't get discouraged as you look through those magazines. Realize that most of them are filled with advertisements for ridiculus, muscle-enhancing drugs and photos of unattainable physiques that are fun to look at. Some magazines do supply a decent amount of training and nutrition information, and some supply a very high quality amount of information to help you build your body and improve your health. Keep in mind most of their information is targeted and directed toward meat-eating, drug-using bodybuilders. Check out some of the natural bodybuilding magazines like Natural Bodybuilding & Fitness or Muscle Media Magazine as well as many others. They focus on natural bodybuilders and fitness athletes with attainable physiques. Many of them also focus on the consumption of animal products, but that is just a representation of our society. I will have a book coming out next year that is all about vegan bodybuilding, fitness, and healthy living. Read it for inspiration and quality information on how to achieve your desired results the compassionate way, with vegan muscle!

What kind of supplements do you take?

I do take supplements, but I don't believe that they are in any way necessary. The only reason I take them is because I'm a bodybuilder and like to have excess amounts of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc. because my workout program is so strenuous and taxing on my body.

The people who think that just because someone is a vegetarian or vegan they would require supplements are uninformed, uneducated, and most likely know little or nothing about nutrition. Any nutritional program requires some sort of awareness, but there seems to be a trend of worrying about vegans and vegetarians meeting daily nutritional requirements. It is quite the opposite really; the people consuming animal producs are the ones who should really be conscerned about their health, as each day they are putting themselves at risk for many debilitating diseases directly resulting from the consumption of animal products. Animal products are toxic to the human body, and don't really do any good, only harm. In most cases, eating animal products leads to obersity, heart disease, hart attacks, strokes, and many other diseases and problems.

As far as the supplements that I use, when I am actively training as a bodybuilder I take a multivitamin, isolated soy protein powder, vitamin C, vitamin E, flax seed oil, L-gluamine (amino acid), and a few others occasionally like immune system boosters and evening primrose oil.

What is an average day's food consumption for you? What types of foods do you eat?

This is a fun question to answer because eating is my favorite thing to do. I actually answer this question on my website under "What Does Robert Eat?". [Included is] a list of vegan foods and sample nutrition programs, directly extracted from my regular diet.

My nutrition program does change quite a bit throughout the year. When I'm in the off-season of bodybuilding (thrying to put on mass) I eat a lot of food; high protein, high carbohydrates, high fat, and high calories. I gain a lot of weight of muscle and fat, and my strength and size increase dramatically. When I prepare for a bodybuilding competition, I cut down on my carbohydrate and fat intake, and I eliminate junk foods, processed foods and foods that don't have high nutritional value. I keep the protein hgih and continue to train with heavy weights, and I also incorporate cardiovascular training into my regimen. This process allows me to drop body fat while maintaining muscle mass so I get "ripped and shredded" for competition.

Bodybuilders tend to understand wight gain and weight loss better than anyone, perhaps even doctors, because we are constatnly experimenting on our own bodies to find out which methods are most effective to achieve desired results. Do you ever see doctors experimenting on themselves? not to say that they don't know what they're talking about when they prescribe you something to assist your weight-loss ir weught-gain program, but bodybuilders are there in the trenches doing the hard work and seeing results immediately based on their nutritional choices and specific training regimens.

To get back to the topic, I will admit that when I am in regular everyday life, not preparing for a bodybuilding competition, I will eat things like Soy Delicious soy ice cream, vegan cookies, vegan donuts, vegan candies, vegan pastas, vegan breads, etc. They not have the best nutritonal value, but at least they are not full of harmful animal fats and by-products or refined white sugars. My favorite foods to eat are tofu, potatoes, rice, beans, chickpeas, nuts, and fruits, especially pineapples, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, and bananas.

I would encourage you to visit www.veganbodybuilder.com to view the nutrition programs, but I will share a typical day's food consumption with you here. This is from my nutrition log, which I happen to have with me. All of the following are vegan foods.
