I'm a vegetarian and I would like my dog or be one as well, so what brand of dog food can I buy?

Liz, age 22:Check out these websites: http://www.veggiepets.com/acatalog/vegetarian_dog_food.html,
http://www.epetpals.com/vegetarian_dog_food.htm, http://www.barfworld.com/.
Laurel, age 18: The most reliable way I know of to purchase dogfood is from Pangea (veganstore.com). Pangea sells canned dog food as well as biscuits and vegan "pig ears."
Matthew, age 26: Go to www.vegancats.com. They offer Dog and Cat food that is vegan.
Laura, age 16: Most healthfood stores sell special dog food, either
readily prepared or in need of some cooking. It's also
important to consult a veterinarian- even though dogs
can easily be vegetarians (cats cannot), a special
diet is needed to prevent uncomfortable excess gas and
provide enough energy. You're best off checking
with a vet, animal nutritionist or someone with
experience in this kind of thing.
Jessica, age 16: Congratulations on beginning to extend your compassion to animals to what is
on your pooch's plate. My best advice for you is to do some online research. Search google for
"vegan dog food," "Vegan pets" or "Vegan dogs." The possibilities are
endless, and you'll find a wealth of information and hopefully a credible
website that will ship you products for your cruelty-free pet food.
Remember, research and careful planning is key to keeping your dog healthy
on a veg diet! Don't try just feeding him carrots and celery. The best bet
is to go with those vegan pet foods (if you don't live in a big city that
has it, try the net, as I mentioned) because they will have all vitamins
supplemented within it.
Lucy, Vegetarianteen.com Editor: Wysong is a very reputable company who, even though they *do* have animal products in most of their animal foods, make sure the food animals are treated well and it is organic. They have a vegan product that is suitable for dogs and cats. I've had my pets on Wysong products and they are very healthy, smell good, have nice coats, good skin, and no fleas!! It's cost more than the processed junk at the grocery store, but it's worth every penny. Also, since the animals absorb so much more of the nutrients, they don't eat as often as they do on the other stuff.
