"I was wondering if it was cruel to eat cheese and drink milk. I am a vegetarian and I have been for over a year, but I've never really thought of milking a cow being cruel. Is it?"

ANSWERS:
Tammy, age 19: The process of milking a cow differs--there are some factories that pump the cow with antibiotics, feed them an inadequate diet, and confine them to small, dark places. They don't take good care of the animals, whereas some family farms sincerely take care of their animals (by giving them adequate space, food and generally humane treatment). However, the latter case is very rare; most of our milk products come from factory farms and not from family farms. This means that the factory is out to make the most profit and that requires certain measures that many vegetarians don't agree with. If you're going to consume milk or milk products, it is probably best to buy organic or free range because not only is it better for you (you're not consuming all the hormones that the cow consumed), but it's also better for the animals. If you don't feel right doing that, then you can always try the vegan route and cut out all dairy and eggs and their derivatives. Hope that helps!
